Why 987 Owners Upgrade Their Lighting
The 987 was designed in an era of halogen and early bi-xenon units, and age has not been kind to either - cloudy lenses, tired reflectors and dim output are common on original cars. A modern LED or projector-style unit transforms both night driving and the front-end look, which is why lighting is one of the most popular first modifications on a 987.
987.1 vs 987.2 Headlight Fitment
The pre-facelift 987.1 (2005-2008) and facelift 987.2 (2009-2012) use different headlight housings and mounting points, and their front bumpers are shaped differently around them. Units are not interchangeable between the two generations, so confirm your year before ordering. Cayman and Boxster share the same headlight units.
Bi-Xenon and Litronic Cars
If your 987 was specified with bi-xenon or Litronic headlights, it has self-levelling and often headlight washers. Replacing those units with aftermarket LED or projector lamps can trigger warning messages unless the new unit includes the correct ballast and levelling provisions. Check this with the supplier before buying - retro-fitting levelling afterwards is a much bigger job.
Avoiding Dash Warnings After Fitting LEDs
The 987 monitors bulb resistance, so a straight LED bulb swap in the tail lights or indicators often triggers a bulb-failure warning even when everything actually works. Load resistors or CANbus-compatible units solve it, and on some cars the bulb check can be coded out with a diagnostic tool by a specialist.
LED Tail Lights and Rear Lighting
Full LED tail light assemblies are available as direct replacements for the factory units and are usually plug-and-play, with the main work being access behind the rear trim. It is one of the highest-impact rear-end upgrades on a 987, particularly on early cars with the pre-facelift light design.

Lighting changes the whole character of the front end and is hard to picture from a product photo. Rebody lets you select your exact 987 Boxster, add aftermarket lighting to the parts basket and generate front, side and rear renders so you can judge the result on your own car before committing.
